Pop icon Mariah Carey is heartbroken over the simultaneous loss of her mother and sister. The 'Emotions' singer shared the tragic news that her 87-year-old mother, Patricia, and her 63-year-old sister, Alison, both passed away within hours of each other over the weekend.
In a poignant statement to PEOPLE, Mariah Carey expressed her profound sorrow, saying, "My heart is broken over the loss of my mother this past weekend. Tragically, my sister also passed away on the same day." Carey reflected on the precious time she had with her mother before her death, sharing, "I feel blessed to have spent the last week with my mom." She also extended her gratitude to her fans, requesting privacy during this difficult period: "I appreciate everyone's love and support and kindly ask for respect for my privacy during this unimaginable time."
The 55-year-old superstar did not reveal any details regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
Patricia Carey, a former opera singer and vocal coach, married Alfred Roy Carey in 1960 and welcomed Mariah nine years later. The couple separated while Mariah was still a young child.
