West Ham secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with a thrilling late victory over fellow Premier League team Bournemouth.

West Ham have advanced to at least the third round of the Carabao Cup for ten consecutive years.

In the 88th minute, as the match was heading towards a penalty shootout, the Hammers found a stroke of luck when Mohammed Kudus' shot deflected off Jarrod Bowen and trickled past Cherries goalkeeper Neto for the decisive goal.

The Bournemouth coaching staff believed the ball had struck Bowen's arm, but without the video assistant referee (VAR) system in place, the goal was allowed to stand, much to the visitors' dismay.

Andoni Iraola's side had recently been on the losing end of a contentious VAR handball decision when Dango Ouattara was denied a potential late winner in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

At London Stadium, Bournemouth will also be left questioning how they were eliminated from the competition.

The best opportunities had gone to the visitors, with Marcus Tavernier hitting the post with a curling free-kick. He also forced a strong save from Lukasz Fabianski, who made an excellent stop to deny Ouattara's deft flick even when the ball was behind him.

The hosts struggled to make an impact in the first 30 minutes, taking 41 minutes to register their first shot on target. Niclas Füllkrug, making his first start for the Hammers since his £27m transfer from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, headed the ball weakly at Neto.

The Germany forward also played a key role in setting up Crysencio Summerville, but the Dutchman, last season’s Championship Player of the Year at Leeds, could only miss the target with his shot.

As penalties loomed, Bowen had a shot pushed wide by Neto, but the goalkeeper was beaten shortly afterward as the Hammers secured a contentious victory.

The third-round draw was held later on Wednesday, and West Ham were drawn to face Liverpool away in September.
